The Philippines is an archipelago with highly optimistic people who believe that every problem could be managed with optimism. Such perspective spurns the need for mental health promotion, prevention, care and rehabilitation. Most of the Filipinos, who have mental illness or a family member with such, ignore the fact that it is essential for them to be helped by professional practitioners. Some are even denying it for they believe that it is a weakness in their personality. This stigma is one of the major hindrances that people with mental illness have to overcome.

There is a call for mental health awareness in our country. Early intervention could be of great help to our loved ones to have the reliable diagnosis and receive the appropriate care. Mental illness cannot be treated simply with optimism, proper treatment is necessary. We must know that raising awareness is just the start of the process; action is what's actually needed.

Raising awareness can reduce misconceptions. This could stop many people who think mentally ill individuals are just lazy, making it up or crazy. These labels, negative adjectives, are formed due to the lack of awareness. Awareness is a form of education, it is a life-long process and not just for a day or two. Mental health awareness, more than anyone else, should begin with us.
