Filipinos are in love with other nationalities. Culture appreciation can be seen anywhere from social media to events where otakus can dress up like their favorite characters. Posts about their Japanese, Chinese, and Korean crushes are what I would likely see in my friends’ Facebook accounts. There are even times that we laugh at the artists who are Filipinos because ‘they are not like our idols’. I think it is okay to appreciate other culture because we have the freedom to do so and because they feed our love for picturesque scenes, beautiful protagonists, and well-written, unexpected plots. It is the truth that there are still a lot that our media has to learn to reach that kind of level. Our scenes are usually angled in just one place, our variety shows are just played in studios, and our plots are so predictable.
Culture appreciation is good and we can admire other nationalities’ love for their history and traditions. But, did you notice that the people who are often into foreign movies or dramas are usually slowly copying how they dress, talk, and even eat? Restaurants that boast Korean or Japanese foods are getting famous right now since we love to imagine ourselves in that country and eating the food our idols are eating. We even buy more materials that are manufactured international and rarely buy locally made goods. A meme popped a few days ago with Rizal’s picture asking those who fancy foreigners and their products, ‘is this worth dying for?’ and it made me pause and ponder if we are wrong and if we are appreciating others while disliking our culture. Are we subconsciously wishing we were not born Filipinos?
I am not telling you to stop watching Korean dramas, Japanese-made animes, or even Hollywood movies since we find happiness in them. I am only telling that the appreciation that we have for the love that they show for their culture should make us love our own more. Be proud that we are country who is still religiously free, our speech is not censored, and our culture is diverse and rich. Be proud that you carry in your veins the blood of Tausugs, Cebuanos, Warays, and other tribes. Culture appreciation for others should magnify culture appreciation for ourselves.
