When people think of beauty pageants, they get a certain mental image based on what they have seen from watching them on TV and from stories in the news. Beauty pageants are all about displaying the best aspects of you. You want the judges to see how great you look, interview, and perform your talent. You're already beautiful and capable, but winning a beauty pageant takes practice. To win it, you should take the time to pick out the right hair, makeup, gown, and swimsuit. Then, practice your talent and interview questions so that you can be on your way to wearing that crown.
For many participants, beauty pageants are more than just entertainment and being a pretty face. A beauty queen's victory can symbolize another woman's hopes and dreams. it's the examples of how sexism continues to be a part of our everyday lives. They reduce women to objects to be judged and compared based primarily on physical appearance. This is a problem that everyone needs to work towards solving, not just women if we want a fair and equal society.
As an audience, we enjoy the entertainment aspect of these competitions, we applaud, we laugh and we vote, but we are not always aware of the message beauty pageants actual send. They teach women that their self-worth comes from physical beauty. They encourage contestants to conform beauty standards, fostering “destructive perfectionism and self-criticism”. Some contestants do so with the help of plastic surgery and eating disorders, which are bad for both a person's physical and mental health. It's good to feel attractive on the outside, but being smart and confident on the inside is what counts and that’s what it takes to become a beauty pageant winner.
