When you heard the word boxing, the first thing that comes into your mind must be “Manny Pacquiao. He is one of the most renowned personalities in this sport today, surpassing many world records of the great boxers in history. He recently won the WBA (regular) Welterweight Title against Lucas Matthysse via Technical Knockout on July 15, 2018 at Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, when the referee stopped the fight at 7th round when Pacquiao landed a left uppercut to the opponent that made him kneeled down and yielded to the Pacman. It was Manny’s first knockout since 2009 with his fight against Miguel Cotto.
Boxing is beyond sport. It is very evident that there were so many Filipinos who fought in the boxing arena not just because of the sport itself, but because they look at it as an escape from their dire situation and somehow lift their lives from poverty. Some are really into boxing because it is their passion like, the “Hawaiian Punch” Brian Veloria, but most Filipino fighters were fighting for their luck in the ring.
No matter what our fellow Filipinos’ reasons for getting into that battle, we always rejoiced and felt proud of them when they conquered the ring and brought home the bacon. They deserved our appreciation and the recognition that our government had awarded them. Let us show them that what they did in that boxing arena isn’t just a simple win in that sport, but a pride in every Filipino’s heart.
