As I grew in my teaching career, I’ve found out that there are concepts which are easy to teach while there are those that aren’t. One thing that always stands out, however, is that character is better caught than taught.
There was one time I got to spend a few extra hours with a couple of kids for remedial learning. By the end of the short period we were together, they were able to help the other kids learn their concepts as well by using the way I taught them. I didn’t need for them to go through some training just to be like me but they were able to adapt it because of constantly seeing me do it. The same thing happens at home. Kids bring in to school the behavior they think is good because that’s what they often see at home. They act as mirrors to reflect what they see in others.
As teachers, parents or guardians to children, we should be careful in training kids as they grow up especially in the area of character. We should always be conscious of those little eyes that watch us as we do things and of the little hands that look forward to do the things we do just because they want to be like us. We don’t need to often tell them to do this or that to become a person of good character someday-- we simply need to show them.
