Leadership And Servant-hood

One thing that stands out during political campaigns is the politicians’ promise of serving the people. It is vital for a leader to have a servant’s heart because leading a group is totally not a walk in the park, let alone leading the whole country for example. It’s quite paradoxical that for one to be a great leader, he must be a humble servant but it’s actually true. Here are some reasons why.   

Everything always begins from small things and this same rule applies to leadership. A person wouldn’t know how to lead if at first, he doesn’t know how to serve. Some great men in history started being humble workers yet diligent students who were granted the opportunities to lead because of their character. If he can’t serve well when he’s in a small position, how can we expect him to serve when he’s in a big one? He should think of what he can give as a form of service rather than the privileges he can get out of the position.

The next thing is still connected with serving and that is humility in service. A leader should always keep in mind that he is elected to serve others and NOT to be served by others. He must be sensitive of the need of his people and do to answer this need. In addition, a leader must also be one who is honest and hardworking person. He must be transparent of his plans for the welfare of his people and he must not also be afraid of getting his hands dirty if it means finishing the job he wants to get done. By doing so, he sets an example for his people to follow.

In conclusion, the secret that makes a person a great leader is servant-like character and that’s what aspiring leaders should train themselves to develop before getting into the position.
