THE CRYING TURTLE
When a fisherman caught a turtle and the turtle starts to cry, he thinks that the turtle was crying because he brought it out from the water. The turtle indeed is crying but it has nothing to do with their emotion, they are not sad or whatever. Sea turtle cries because it is their way of excreting their extra salt in their body. When turtle drink saltwater, seawater is break down in their bodies and the extra salt enters the turtle's bloodstream and is sent to the animal's salt glands. The salt glands then make a liquid that is twice as salty as the original saltwater drank by the sea turtle, and the solution leaves the sea turtle through its eyes, as tears.
Even though the turtle is not actually crying, but it has all the reason to cry because for how many years the population of turtles has been dwindling so fast. With the irresponsible waste management of companies, they throw their waste to the sea without treating it. Even people are throwing garbage at sea as if the sea has the power to incinerate plastics, metal, and a lot of trash. Tons and tons of trash are building up in the seabed where the turtle will mistake them as food and if ingested it will cause suffocation and eventually cause death among them.
How many turtles will continue to suffer because of our negligence and insensitiveness? How many of us will continue to act dumb and not care about our environment especially our ocean. We can be an agent of change. Change must start within ourselves. We should take responsibility with our ocean and the environment around us. Let us altogether lend a hand to make this earth a better place to live with by taking care of our garbage and waste responsibly. Let us foster ecological balance so that the crying turtle will cry no more.
