When oranges fall from the sky, I will definitely be outside catching some with a big basket! Kidding aside, Orange rainfall is actually a code used by PAGASA to warn the citizens that the speed and amount of rainwater can cause flooding and that one should be ready to evacuate any time. There are also codes such as the yellow rainfall and the red rainfall. Yellow rainfall is a code telling us that the speed and amount of rainwater is okay but you should monitor the weather for any changes. Red rainfall does not mean blood-colored water would pour, but the speed and amount of rainwater is alarming and one should evacuate from the area without delay. This is the highest level in the codes given by PAGASA and one should expect ones’ properties would likely be damaged or irreparable.
Orange rainfalls can either become yellow or red in a matter of hours. I still remember the Sendong disaster. Who would have thought that after our Year End Fellowship, I would never see my teacher alive again? I remember waving goodbye, not knowing that it was the last time. The rain that poured early afternoon was not a thing of concern since it was expected, but when the coconut tries began to dance like crazy, I panicked for my parents who was still not home. The trees began leaning in one direction and I felt like crying for fear that my parents are stranded somewhere, but they arrived after hours of traffic and I was relieved, believing all was well. However, all was not well. What dawned as a beautiful, clean, and bright day revealed the devastation that was just a ‘sprinkle’ of rain in the afternoon.
Incidents such as loss of property, livestock, and even life can be prevented with the help of the experts’ advice. During heavy downpours, be alert and prepare items that can be used when electricity fails such as candles, flashlights, and extra batteries. One should also secure property, placing gadgets in the highest place in your house and bringing what you could. Prepare for emergency foods and divide the load with your family members to ensure sustenance until the situation becomes good. Most importantly, listen to the radio and evacuate when authorities tell you to evacuate immediately. Do not be stubborn and pretend you can prevent destruction of property by staying in your homes. The flood respects no one. If your local government tells you that orange rainfall is to be expected, then that is the time you prepare to leave any time because life is more important than material things.
