During a conference focused on acknowledging lumads, one student raised a question that baffled the speaker. The question was this “How will the government resolve the problem in economic development within the ancestral lands?” The speaker pondered the given question and sadly replied “I still have no idea how”.
This is one of the biggest problems that we, Filipinos, are still trying to solve. We value our heritage, the preservation of our traditions, and the continuation of our diverse cultures. Yet, how can we do so while economically advancing?
Philippines is rich in minerals, therefore attracting foreign and local investors to invest in mining. These mineral-filled lands are usually on ancestral lands where the lumads live or where they perform rituals. There is an ongoing collision between Human Rights activists who are fighting for the lumads displaced from their own lands against the Armed Forces of the Philippines with the result of mass evacuation in Surigao Del Sur on July 16, 2018. There were reports of abuse and sexual harassments performed by the ‘soldiers’ who are guarding the lands of the coal-filled lands of the Manobo tribe. Thousands of natives were forced out of their homelands, with no place to call their own, wandering around with no absolute destination.
What will now happen to the culture and traditions that took thousands of years to preserve? I can only reply “I still have no idea”.
