We have so many parents complaining about their children’s behavior. As Filipinos, it is very important that we instill good values in our children. Values should be practiced since they deeply influence all behavior and attitudes and affect our decision and relationship. It is often held with great conviction. Our Known and practiced values will guide us in determining when and how we want to intervene in a situation with our children. If we see our children misbehaving in their actions that are contrary to our values we want to instill to them, then this will be our opportunity to do our job as a parent to implement the values and the behaviors that we want for them rather than a reason to get angry and punish them.
Most Filipinos recognize the need for their children to know and apply Filipino traits and values. How do we teach them? Here are some pointers;
1. Filipinos are accustomed to using the word " po, opo, at ho" when they talk to adults. It’s giving respect to a person older.
2. Kissing elder hands before leaving or upon arrival.
3. Younger members of the family show respect toward the older sibling by calling Kuya (older brother) or ate (older sister)
Instilling this kind of values to children will protect them from potentially negative societal influences and lay the foundation for them to become good citizens. Help your children see that what you’re teaching them about right and wrong is not simply your own ideas but comes from the word of God. Remember that it takes time and practice before your child internalizes some values, be patient and hopeful.
