The Pursuit of Peace

Every now and then we hear pageant contestants’ ultimate dream is for the world to have peace. Even notable country and world leaders often say that their ultimate vision is a world where every nation go hand in hand to achieve a long and lasting peace. This vision has been thought of years and years ago. The question is, where are we now in this pursuit of world peace?

Let us go back years ago when people would still fight for basic rights and nations clamor to get a presence in the world. A lot of bloody fights, wars, and hostilities happened just to prove or get something in this world. With the passing of time we ask, are we getting nearer to this ultimate peace?

A lot of organizations have been established by leaders to promote peace such as the United Nations, to unite countries and establish a common understanding all over the globe. It also arbitrates between conflicting countries and also offer aid to countries struck by calamities.

Indeed, we can say that the world is doing something to create peace.

But why is it that the world seems to be more divided than ever? Wars are still rampant on the other side of the globe. Countries go on civil wars over a piece of land. Not to mention the birth of many types of discrimination happening everywhere.

Peace, as defined, is the concept of harmony and the absence of hostility and freedom from fear of violence between individuals.

Do we want world peace? Of course, we do. Are we having it? No.

Achieving peace is a collective effort of every individual. It is the result of the cooperation of every human being. Respecting each other’s rights and opinions. Valuing each other’s existence.

Peace starts within ourselves. If we want peace, let it start with us.
