The Golden Age of Sailing was acutely distressing (not to mention sickening) for old-time sailors who sailed on those classic big ships. They have to endure poor living condition, the imposition of a penalty and the constant threat of cruelty. Life at sea certainly wasn't all booze and music. Few of the reasons why old-time sailing was THE WORST:

·         Over-crowding. Pirate ships would bring far more sailors than necessary since some were expected to sicken and die. Of Course, the crowded conditions only worsen that "sicken and die" thing.

 ·         Safety Measures. It was customary on many ships to have "piss tubs" Lying around. Used both as toilets and as emergency fire extinguishers. Imagine the smell.

 ·         Bad Food. Unrecognizable, picked meat was called "salt horse" due to suspicions about its origin. "Slush" was the fatty dregs of the boiled salt. Sailor became used to tapping their biscuits on the table to knock the maggots out before digging in.

 ·         Punishments. Have you ever heard the phrase "Cat got your tongue" or "Let the cat out of the bag" and wonder what felines had to do with the situation? The "cat-O-nine tails" was a hemp whip used for punishment. If it was taken out of the bag, things had gone bad for you. If it had your tongue, you might be too afraid to speak.

 ·         Cannibalism. Though talking it on land was taboo, sailor resorted to eating each other after shipwrecks or in the long becalmed period was an open secret. It's said that the practice of drawing straws to choose who would be sacrificed in such circumstances was well known enough to be called "the custom of the sea."

Today's seamen are very lucky they don't need to experience any of it. There are a lot of huge Cruise Ships sailing around the world, bringing joy both to their patrons and personnel with the beautiful amenities and delightful mouth-watering foods.
