Weeks ago, a post on social media by a newbie actor/dancer went viral. He asked if someone could make him a graphic cover or banner for his social channel in exchange for a “shoutout” - a brief expression of greeting or praise given especially on a broadcast or audio recording or even through social media posts.
Many were enraged on the post of the said celebrity because he seemed to have taken for granted an artist’s service.
He even said that he only need a basic graphic art and he will be happy if somebody will do it or not.
What the celebrity did is similar to what other people are doing as well. Asking their friends for discounts or freebies on their businesses, requesting for free services from your relatives, and even asking a simple favor without giving something in return even if having the capacity to do so.
People should understand that there is no such thing as free lunch. Just because your friend owns a small business does not mean you are entitled for discounts. Just because you know someone who is an artist does not mean their work is for free. Countless efforts and years were spent to study and improve their skills. Just because you only need a simple service does not mean they do not have to pay for utilities, materials used, or even the opportunity cost. We should not burden them with our requests but rather support them like how we support other people’s services and business who we do not personally know.
