There are just stories that stay with us, stories that leave us smiling or unhappy, and it is usually about love. Love can appear just anywhere and at any time. It could be that you just bumped into him, you looked and he was just there, or you already met him when you were just a kid. Love for my friend Mich* came when she was around 13. She was surprised that 20-year-old John* would be the one to make her heart flutter. How can she predict that someone so sophisticated look at a gawky, awkward teen? He would make midnight calls when he was sure Mich’s parents are already asleep and ask her how her day was. He would then tell her that he loved her and that he would wait for her. He promised her that he would look for a job and then come back when she was ready for marriage. Who would have thought that love would be so perfect for someone so young?
Love for Mich was patient. She never told anyone that she was already taken and just waiting for John to come home and marry her. When loneliness would threaten to make her cry, she would make herself remember that he promised to come back for her. Even when John suddenly lost all contact, she still waited. Even she hears rumors of him being seen together with another woman, she refused to believe it and waited some more. At last, after 7 years of pining and hoping with no communication whatsoever, John came home. He was so dear and so precious for Mich, she described the moment as ‘a time one forgets to breath’. She was so happy that she failed to notice the pretty girl beside him. Imagine what she felt when John suddenly announced the wedding date! Mich felt something crash inside her and she told me that ‘it was the sound of her heartbreaking’. What was ironic was the fact that John asked her to help coordinate their wedding. She was there when he kissed his bride, when he said hello to their first baby, and when his baby learned how to walk. I can only smile bitterly when I see Mich play with his baby, who was so attached to her.
When I asked Mich how it felt, looking at his family who lived just a few blocks from her home, she said it hurts sometimes. Mich said that it would have been easier if the one that got away actually stayed away and never came back. TOTGABRTS kind of love hurts like an open wound that is always sprinkled with salt. What Mich learned was that, even with her unhappy ending, if she can put her forward and move on one step at a time, you can too. No matter how love found and left you, you can grow stronger only when you pick yourself off the ground.
