‘When Are You Getting Married?’

That question was not asked to me since I am still young, but to a few of my friends who already passed the number of the calendar. Marriage is to some, a race against time and other people. A group of friends I know are literally getting engaged after the other, saying that ‘she would not let her friend beat her to the altar’. Some are forced to marry since they already anticipated the wedding night and a child would be born months earlier than expected. I have also heard of stories about ladies who plan traps to get the guys they want by getting pregnant with the guy’s child.

Marriage, a chapter in one’s life where one leaves parents and live with a partner for life. That person will be the one you will fight with, rear children with, and grow old with, until the day you die. Can you imagine living with one person for the rest of your life? In sickness and in health? For better or for worse? That is why we need not rush those who are still patiently waiting for the one God made for them. A close friend of mine is now happily married at the age of 36 with a man who was 15 years her senior. She was his first girlfriend, telling us that he was waiting all along for that one person who would be the one he would love and would love him back. She told me that ‘age was not the issue here because God already set the timing and it was perfect’. She told me that maturity must find us first for us to be able to deal with the problems that come with marriage. I know of a couple who married early and I can say their household is filled with fights and bickering. They were still not mature enough to handle the trials that every marriage would bring since they let their emotions get in the way of making the important, life-changing decision of marrying young. 

If you were also asked that question, you can reply with a smile ‘I’m still waiting for him to find me’. Don’t let others pressure you in accepting the wrong person so you can stop being an ‘old maid’. Wait for the right time and let maturity find you first. Marriage preparations should not be about finding the right man but focusing on being the perfect woman.
