Amateur Cooks: The Art Of Teaching Kids How To Survive

I once invited my classmates to go to my home after doing our project, thinking I should cook up something. When I started to prepare the ingredients, they asked me if my mom would be there to cook for us. I told them that I am the cook for that meal and they were really surprised. I was confused on why they would show that kind of reaction, so I told them it is normal and my brother even knows how to cook. Their eyes widened and they told me that it was amazing. How can something so mundane be amazing for others?
I always thought that cooking was something that everyone who has the same age as me would already know. My classmates’ reactions showed that this thought was erroneous. Cooking was something that was foreign to most of them since their moms would always do it for them. I think that is okay because it is in our culture that mothers are usually the ones who know how to cook. But, the question is, when should the children learn how to cook for their future family? I always thought that I was a cooking genius since my family eats whatever I prepared when my parents started to train me at the age of around 7 or 8. I would be proud and sometimes insist that I do the cooking that evening since I need to feed my hungry family with ‘delicious’ food. Years later, I felt embarrassed after hearing my mom tell other moms that my cooking was terrible. They would ask her why she didn’t reprimand me or my siblings that our cooking was awful and she replied, “I never told them it tasted awful since I wanted to encourage them to cook various foods and I know they will eventually learn how to make tasty dishes”. She told her friends that even if she sometimes had to endure eating the awful food, it was worth it after realizing that we became motivated when she gave us a big smile and thumbs up. She was right to let us be when it came to cooking since we now know how to cook and we would take turns every day. We would just tell her when the food is ready and her lunch is packed.
I have heard stories about families who never taught their kids how to cook and I can say that they must be regretting it now. A grandmamma had to wake up very early even if she is tired since her daughters and grandchildren don’t know how to cook and would probably starve if she stayed in bed. A college student who came home with sunken cheeks since he only ate instant noodles, not knowing how to cook a decent meal. If you are young parents, then you should consider teaching your children how to cook. Yes, the taste will probably be awful at first, but it is actually just for their own good and they will eventually learn how to cook dishes deliciously. Every family member should know how to cook because that is the way one can survive when living alone or feed the families that they eventually will have.
