There should be some people who one should love unconditionally, just as they love us so. Our parents will always be there when you need help, a shoulder to cry on, and of course, allowances when we go to school or on adventures with friends. We are dependent of them, from the start of conception, to the time we were born, and until the day we die. I could still hear the heart-breaking wail that expressed the sorrow my aunt was in when Grandmamma died, leaving those who listen choking in our tears. Our parents, no matter how grown up we become, will always be the ‘mama and papa’ we look for before we can fall asleep at night.
However, are parents getting the respect they deserve? I know of someone who would call her mom by her given name instead of calling her mama, mommy, or nanay. She would snap at her poor mom whenever she’s angry and would show disrespect publicly. Disrespect usually starts young. A student of mine who was still three years old would have tantrums and would ceaselessly hit her mom until she gets what she wants. I would intervene and bring the student outside our classroom and talk to her, explaining to her that it is not good to hit her mama, especially since she was pregnant. After that, I began to observe how the mother and child interacted. When the child wants anything, the mother is quick to give it to her. This I believe would cause the child to believe that the mother is a ‘servant’, there to do anything for her. Sadly, this could be one of the breeding grounds for disrespect as the child’s older brother shows the same regard.
In Mark 7:10, a verse tells us that ‘..whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death.’ No matter who your parents are, vendors or professional they may be, respect them. Be proud of them and do not forget that they are one in a million. The way you treat your parents will be the way your children will treat you. Do not wait and tell them how much you love and value them right now while they are still alive. Your parents would probably love to hear words of appreciation from you rather than recited as a eulogy in their funerals.
