The effect of climate change can be felt all throughout the world. We can watch in televisions and through the internet the ill-effects of climate change with the coming of super typhoons. Flash floods are happening in the US, in China, in the Philippines and all throughout the world. Countries that are not prone to flash floods are suffering the pangs of it. Even countries in the Middle East are experiencing flash floods like never before.

But what causes climate change? Experts say that the world is becoming hotter and hotter because the ozone layer that serves as our protection against too much heat and radiation from the sun is becoming thinner and thinner. Scientific studies have proven that the cause of ozone layer depletion is human activity, specifically, human-made chemicals that contain chlorine or bromine. These chemicals are widely known as Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS). Compounds such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which are mainly used as a coolant in home appliances like freezers, refrigerators and air conditioners in both buildings and cars are the main ozone-depleting substances. CFCs are also found in dry cleaning agents, hospital sterilants, and industrial solvents.

With the depletion of the ozone layer, the earth is now exposed to strong ultraviolet light. Overexposure to ultraviolet light causes skin cancer, cataracts, sunburns, weakening of immune system and quick aging among humans. It is not only humans that will suffer, but the plants, the marine life, and the environment as well. Weather condition will be worst as the world will continue to experience drastic change in weather especially the melting of ice in the north pole, thus, creating unpredictable weather pattern.

With the coming of super typhoons and drastic weather changes, the world has been alarmed on what to do in lessening the effects of climate change. Nations are working hand in hand in combating the effects of climate change by looking for any substitute of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

As for every individual, we can make a difference and be part of the solution in our little ways. We must lessen the use of aerosol sprays which are detrimental in the thinning of our ozone layer. Let us go green using less and less fuel. If our destination nearby, we walk or use a bicycle instead of riding an automobile that gives off carbon monoxide in the air. Let us plant more trees and not burn tires. Let us contend climate change put into heart that we only have one planet earth to live, so let us take care of it, less, this earth that we habituate will become a dangerous place to live with.
