Great People In Training: Why Household Chores Are The Best

I like reading at night and into the early morning at around 3:00 am. So imagine how irritated I would feel when I am forced awake at 6 or even 5:00 am because I need to do my household chores? I would grumble and tell my mom to leave me alone, but then I would wake up anyway to cook or do what I am assigned to do that day. I would then proceed to do all the tasks I was asked to do before I go to bed again for a much needed morning nap.
Household chores are, as to what I discovered early in my life, a very tiresome job. Your time must be divided so that you can still have a few vacant hours after doing your tasks. The more siblings you have, the lesser the tasks. Sometimes when the work is too big for one child, the parents would tell the other siblings to help. When your child is still young, most of the time their work is likely to be sloppy since they are still learning and grumbling about hired help doing the job for them. I can only thank my parents for being so strict with me and my siblings. I can still recall kneeling in salt-filled floors, a punishment for running off to play without finishing the daily chores. I would cry and beg to stand but my dad would only tell me that if I don’t stop crying, he will add another 30 minutes of kneeling. After that, I would force myself to quiet down, promising myself not to forget next time. Of course, I forgot to wash the dishes, sweep the floor, and water the plants sometimes and I got punished every time I forgot, that I memorized my weekly schedule by heart. I would wake up early even if I had no intentions to do so, my mind remembering that I have chores to do. Now, we just wake up our parents around 6:30 am when we are almost done the cooking, cleaning the car, and hanging the laundry.
I always thought my parents hated me, especially my dad when he punished me for not doing my chores. I only realized around middle teens that they were teaching us to be responsible and to work hard when we are asked to do something. The things that I learned while I cried my heart after a punishment stayed, influencing my attitude towards other areas in my life, making me mentally strong whenever a responsibility or task is given to me. Household chores will always be seen by your young kids as a punishment but persevere and someday they will thank you for training them into who they have become.
