Facebook is a famous social network were we can share our pictures, look for our friends who now lives far away, and be updated on what is trendy at the moment. However, Facebook scams are also getting rampant now. There was a story on the news where a woman lost thousands of dollars to her ‘boss’ who was actually just using the same name as her real boss. The scammer told the woman that she needed to give a certain amount of money to an account so she did, thinking that it was for investment purposes. After that, the scammer never contacted her again and the thousands of dollars was forever lost.
Scams come in any form. It can be in a text message where you are congratulated for winning an amount of 150,000 pesos from the Atty. So-and-so. It could be a pop up ad where you are told you won a phone and you should send your account number and email address to claim it. There are also scams in the famous social network were your ‘friends’ ask or borrow money and then disappear like a bubble.
In a radio show, a woman who was scammed by her boyfriend asked for help. What happened was she only met him in Facebook and was quite flattered that a handsome guy would ask to be friends with her. She hit accept and they chatted afterwards. Later on, she said yes when he asked if she would be his girlfriend and was sharing her account not long after. She really never saw him face to face but she was happy when they chat. What she did not know was that he was opening her account and reading her messages with clients and friends. He even got the bank account number with his ‘meticulous’ spying in her messages. The woman was devastated when she realized an amount of around 100,000 pesos was stolen from her, addressed to an unknown account. The lesson learned here? Do not just accept friend requests from people you do not personally know. You never know, that handsome or beautiful face might just be a fake account with the purpose of scamming.
