It sounds like a simple illness, but in reality it is a very complex one. Diabetes is a chronic illness that resulted from either failure of the pancreas to secrete enough insulin or when our cells don’t respond to the insulin in our bloodstream, which is called insulin resistance. Every time we eat, especially carbohydrates, our pancreas produce insulin that is proportionate to the type of food we eat according to their glycemic index.
Diabetes is one of the world’s killers. According to the World Health Organization, there were 108 million people having diabetes in 1980 and it rose to 422 million in 2014. That increase in the number of people with diabetes was around 300%. In 2015, there were about 1.6 million people died directly due to diabetes. The culprit why people contracted this kind of illness is already identified and is very preventable. It all stems down from our eating habits, except of course for those who have type 1 diabetes. However, people still won’t learn from it.
Understanding our food and eating the right amount with the right kind would decrease our chance of getting diabetes or even treat those who were diagnosed with one. There are two main things we can do about it. Firstly, to prevent our pancreas from failing to produce enough insulin, don’t overwork them. Eat complex carbohydrates instead of the simple ones, avoid processed foods, and look for foods with low to medium glycemic index. Then, make daily exercise as a habit to at least 30 minutes a day. This will help your cells utilized your insulin well and consume the glucose in your blood.
The complexity of diabetes is still being studied by the specialists. Currently, let’s raise awareness about diabetes and encourage people to be more active and choose healthy foods.
