OFWs suffer for the sake of their family. They work long hours, they usually have no one to talk to, and they often miss family gatherings, but what about those families left behind? What about the child who pines for his mother? What about the eldest sister who must stand as the mother and father for her younger siblings? What about the children who get passed from one relative to another? OFWs are suffering but the families left behind suffer too.
Left behind families have to make do without mother, father or sibling. It’s like a part of the family left, without reassurances that they would come back any time soon. I relate to the feeling of being left behind and it sucks. Your favorite cousin visit and you had a blast, but it will always feel awful when it’s time to say goodbye. I believe that those who are left feeling the pain a bit stronger than those who leave. It feels like they are abandoning you, even though you know they are going to visit someday. Families feel an emptiness and experience anxiety for those who left to work at a faraway place. When something happens to them, you can only cry and pray that they are okay. There also cases that young children get money from their mother stolen by a greedy aunt. They live their life, wondering if their mother forgot her children and how they would survive without her support. Some partners also suffered when the husband or wife who left found someone else. My heart broke for the father and son who missed the mother so much but was given the news that she was now living with someone else.
Families should always live together. One should always stick with the other. That is why I hope with all my heart that our government can find a way to make jobs have bigger salaries or open new jobs so that OFWs can go home and just stay with their families and friends. There is no win-win situation for the OFWs or for the family they left behind.
