With the onslaught of today’s technology, people are no longer listening as much they do before. It’s no wonder then that the teens today seek attention from all other sources since they don’t get the attention they need while growing up. They don’t get appreciation or attention from their parents when they do something successful or when they want to tell something about what happened to school that day so they resort to going over their friends or to social media. Each day, the kids are straying away more and more from their families as this cycle of inattentiveness of family to each other continues.
Being a good listener is something parents should exercise with their kids because these kids will eventually grow up emulating what they saw while growing up. We wouldn’t want to breed a generation of people who pay little to no attention. We may be distracted with work, entertainment or social media but paying attention to our kids must be the priority. We should be attentive to what they want to tell us, about the ideas they are forming and developing at their young age and what they feel about a lot of things. We should be their main source of attention and general knowledge of this world before other influences especially the bad ones get to them. By showing them and making them feel how loved they are through their attention; they can pass that on to others and therefore make a difference in the society.
No matter how busy the day gets to be, let us always take time to give ear to our little ones. It may not mean that much to you but it is the whole world for them when somebody listens and makes them feel important by valuing what they think and say.
