With the ever-growing technology today, we get to see almost every person, young and old, have access to various gadgets and devices. We observe that most of our time everyday are spent staring into colorfully illuminated screens, even from the moment we wake up and before we go to bed at night. That is why children would also want to interact with these devices because of how everybody seems to live with it.
Because of the engaging visuals of these media, children are mostly attracted right away and as to parents, they would let them have it as a form of interactive learning material as well as keeping them entertained.
According to studies, regular interfaces with technology can improve hand-eye coordination, multi-tasking, reaction time, and improvement of one’s ability to identify information and visual stimuli.
However, studies have also shown that technology can have negative effects on a child if not properly controlled. It can affect a child’s ability to think critically because they are fed with too much graphics therefore decreases their portion of daily reading. They are also not challenged to think critically.
Technology affects a child’s attention & imagination as well. Because of the great deal of visual stimuli and lack of reading stories, this may impact the child’s development of imagination. Also, a child will be more distracted and will lack focus.
And lastly, due to technology’s increasing level of connectedness, we might not be able to guard and children’s safety and privacy especially on social media where a lot of predators are lurking. Children might be exposed on various degrees of bullying that may have an impact on a child’s social and emotional development.
Technology, if used in the right way can have a positive impact on the development and growth of children. However too much of it may cause negative effects on them. We just have to make sure that we support and maintain balance at all times.
