The Philippines is a typhoon prone country, expecting around 20 tropical cyclones yearly. This brings major disasters in the country and can claim many innocent lives. It is a good thing that the current State of the Nation Address of President Rodrigo Duterte tackled about the archipelago’s preparation to reduce our vulnerabilities to natural hazards and bolster our resilience to the impact of natural disasters and climate change.
Creating the Department of Disaster Management was the highlight of that part of his speech. Once this department will be launch, there will be a national independent agency which will be tasked to manage the risks of natural and man-made disasters and preempt the cost of lives. He said it will be a truly empowered department characterized by a unity of command, science-based approach and full time focus on natural hazards and disasters, and the wherewithal to take charge of the disaster risk reduction; preparedness and response; with better recovery and faster rehabilitation.
Hopefully the congress would act swiftly into this proposal because there's no better way to manage the risk of natural disasters and hazards but through this.
