Self-discipline is one of the key characteristics of an Aikidoka. The training that Aikido provided to the students is not only limited to rolling on the mats, pinning and throwing techniques, but it is also about one’s mind conditioning and self-discipline.
Aikido was founded and developed by the great teacher Morihei Ueshiba, referred to as O’sensei by most Aikidoka, as a combination of his martial arts trainings and his religious and philosophical belief. It is often translated as “the way of harmonious spirit”. The techniques emphasize using the attackers momentum as a leverage in defending one’s self while still mitigating the injury it could induce to the assailant.
There are a number of styles of Aikido around the world, depending on the time their masters had trained with O’sensei. Some Aikido variants integrated a more combative approach to the art, perhaps because of its applicability on the place where it is being taught. There were some Senseis, who ventured outside Japan and founded their own dojos, faced some locals who tried to test the effectiveness of the art. They were forced to defend against their opponent in a more aggressive manner to prove their stand, which paved a way to some combative styles of Aikido.
No matter which style of Aikido you are practicing, the respect and discipline it inculcated to the students is what makes them so effective.
