The K-12 Skills-based Curriculum

 With the introduction of the K-12 to our educational system, students are now assured that they will become more skillful, competent, and geared up for a lifelong learning and employment. The “K” in the K-12 stands for Kindergarten and “12” refers to the succeeding 12 years of basic education break down into 6 years of elementary education, 4 years of junior high school, and 2 years of senior high school. K-12 is needed in our educational system because we are the last country in Asia and one of the only three countries in the world with a 10-year pre-university program of education.

 To assure of producing skillful graduates, the Department of Education (DepEd) has formed a Technical Vocational unit in the Bureau of Secondary Education to oversee the offering of the Technical Vocational and Livelihood(TVL) track in strengthening its programs that will prepare high school graduates by arming them with skills for employment.

 In molding skillful graduates, the K-12 program trains students as early as 7th grade then continued on to the 10th grade. The TLE or technological livelihood education subjects offered in junior high school or JHS adhere to the rules of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority or TESDA. This will allow the students to earn a national certification (NC) required by the industry even as early as junior high school.

 Junior high school completers or incoming Grade 11 students can freely choose from the three main tracks such as Academic, Technical–Vocational-Livelihood (TVL), and Sports and Arts. The TVL track is the most highlighted program of the K-12 program, in finishing this track, this will allow the student to earn NC II that he/she can use as credentials in applying for a job if he/she wants to work after Senior High School (SHS) graduation.

The following are the list of TVL track with TESDA specialized subjects.

a) Home Economics

b) Agri-Fishery

c) Industrial Arts

d) Information and Communications Technology or ICT
