Most students often find themselves in panic once they are given an assignment in writing be it a speech, a reaction paper or a thesis study. To be able to come up with a good and right output, there are several suggestions one must follow to get the point of writing. Here are some basic tips.
Write the main topic and in the form of a title or a short sentence. You may read books about the topic to further give you ideas about what to write. Identify your intention for writing. Is it to entertain your reader, inform them about an issue, discuss a process, etc. After that, answer the following WH questions about the topic. If you are writing about a person, you may consider answering the following questions in your write-up:
Who is the person? (Give background of the person such as date and place of birth, parents, education, etc.)
What makes him significant?
What did he do?
Where did he do it?
When did he do it?
Why did he do it?
How did he do it?
What is your opinion about the person?
A thousand ideas may come to mind but only a few reach the paper. So it is needful to write anything that comes to mind and just remove the ones that don’t support your main topic as a whole. Next, write an outline about your topic that answers the WH questions. Use as many adjectives as you can to paint a very colorful picture of the idea in the minds of your reader. After that, you can begin writing your draft using your outline as a guide. You may also consider having someone read through your draft to give helpful feedback... Revise if you need to. When you are finished with your draft, read the whole thing and check it for coherence and chronological in order. Also, check for indention, punctuation and grammar errors afterward. After reading through your write-up and finalizing it, you may now submit it to your teacher.
Writing assignments don’t need to be panicked at if one knows the basics. Writing needs a lot of practice. Don’t be afraid to fail or receive many corrections. Use it as a tool to improve. Nobody starts out well instantly but everyone goes through a period of learning until he finally knows how to write right.
