As Pinoys we love spending so much but is unclear if we also love saving. As a proof of that, we love going out to malls with friends and family. Going out to the mall encourages a lot of unnecessary spending on foods, snacks, and other little things that add up.

Starting a savings account can secure our financial arrangement for the future.  But the big question is can we really save? If you don’t know how, here are a few tips and guidelines to help you get started:

 Admit that you need to save badly

Acknowledge the fact that you’re spending more than what you’re supposed to and throwing your hard-earned money at things you don’t need.

 Don’t get jealous how the rich and famous spend

Always make a reality check. What you are seeing in TV and social media how the rich shop and party are only true to them and not on you. We should know and recognized that celebrities don’t earn like the average Juan does and that the products they talk about on social media are often paid for by the different brands they are endorsing. In order to save money, we have to live within, and below your means.

Think long-term

It is good that we have to reward ourselves once in a while with material things. But we have to think of the future ahead. This means you need to think and plan ahead for situations that can potentially impact your finances and sort out possible solutions. Just think that what if you suddenly lose your job? What if a member of your family gets sick and hospitalized? Having an emergency and standing fund will ease and lessen the burden of these unfortunate situations.

 Use public transportation – or share a ride

If you have a car, use only your car if necessary. But for ordinary days, it is better to take the public transportation where you will only pay a fraction spent on gasoline in using your car. By taking the public transportation, so you can save a lot of your gasoline expenses every week. Furthermore, the money you could have paid for a more comfortable ride using your car to work can go to your emergency fund or invest in your long-term goals. Another thing is, If you really can’t stand getting pushed around in a public vehicle and terminal, cut down on costs by carpooling with friends or officemates who live nearby and ask them to contribute to parking and gas.

 Remember that the best things in life are for free

We Pinoys love to go together and enjoy good food in malls. Lots of money are spent every time the whole bunch of extended families goes together. But if you want to save, you have to lessen a little of going out together. We can gather great memories with our loved ones without spending so much. Instead of going out, try cooking a meal at home and have some chit-chat. If you want a change of scenery, go for a drive to the beach, park, or any place you can spend time outdoors without spending much. You’ll find that the experiences and the laughter you’ve had with your family are more meaningful than the food you ate or the things you bought.
