A Silent Cry for Help

We have all heard on the news: Famous actors and artists, teenagers, students, professionals, have committed suicide due to depression. Depression is a serious mental health issue that needs to be given attention. Most of the time it happens to people you certainly do not expect to be depressed. Maybe one of the bubbliest teenagers at your block, the loudest of your friends, or even one of the most successful people you know, is currently experiencing depression. People who suffer from it actually needs support and help. Depressed people’s voices seem to falter when they try to get help because of many aspects. That is why as a friend to someone, we may be able to see signs of suspected depression and help them before its too late.

Here are some signs of depression that will determine if someone you know is suffering or developing depression:

Loss of Pleasure

When one is no longer interested on things they usually find pleasurable. A social person who suddenly miss most social occasions. A girl who loves to talk suddenly becomes silent all the time.

Negativity

When he gives up hope easily on a lot of things. A change of outlook in life.

Forced Happiness

Putting on fake smiles and becoming unusually upbeat when asked if anything is wrong.

Mood Swings

When a normally laid-back person suddenly becomes moody most of the time. Becoming irritable and hostile. Becoming short-tempered and easily frustrated.

Depression is not always obvious. People who suffer from it would want to open up but they just can’t because they fear to be misunderstood. Sometimes they use social media as a means to slightly speak up hoping someone could hear. If you feel someone might be depressed, listen. Be an open ear. Be a friend.
