Are We Only Looking At The Container And Not What It Carries Inside?

This article will talk about something that is as old as time. Discrimination is the act of judging others by her color, clothes, and race. The act of discriminating does not only apply if all the aforementioned are present. It could be that because she is brown, salesladies would follow her everywhere, thinking she might be a ‘thief’. It could be that you get told off or shooed away in a restaurant because you are wearing slippers and look like a ‘beggar’. Discrimination is present in every society. We mentally put people in a box we label ‘pretty’, ‘poor’ and etc. Inside that box, we then proceed to see them as we encountered pretty or poor people in the past. Maybe she is a snob because she is pretty. Maybe she is a thief since she is poor. These are what usually comes to mind when we see people who ‘look’ pretty or poor.

No one can escape discrimination. Whether we are poor or rich, we are judged no matter what social class we belong to. Rich people are commonly judged as corrupt and that the money they have are stolen. Poor people are most often than not labeled as thieves and beggars and so others should be careful when in their company. The funny thing is we often are mistaken with the definition of the 'labels' we put. However, there are rich-looking people who are actually poor. On the other hand, there are also poor-looking people who are just humble and used to wearing ‘poor-like’ clothes when they have millions in their bank accounts.

In Matthew 7:1, a common Bible verse tells one that you should ‘judge not, that ye be not judged’. We do not like it when people stare at us and judge us for what we wear. We do not like it when people judge us for our race, telling us that we only ‘clean rooms and toilets’. We do not like it that salesladies do not pay attention to our inquiries since we look like we can’t afford anything. We do not like it right? Then stop judging others. Give others the benefit of the doubt since people are often not what we perceive them. Discrimination is something that can be minimized when the one reading this article would start not judging others by appearance alone.
