Zamboanga City, Philippines- President Rodrigo Duterte announced that he already signed the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) on July 27, 2018, few days after his State of the Nations Address wherein he promised to sign BOL saying "give me 48 hours", urging the Congress to fast-track its passage. His announcement was attested by Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.
The Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) or Republic Act No.11054 aims to abolish the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao which was established through RA 6734 in 1989 which includes the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-tawi. BOL is the latest significant effort by the government which seeks to provide autonomy in the said region, eradicate poverty and end armed conflict which for many years has rubbed its people from a peaceful abode and better quality of life.
President Duterte's signing of BOL came after the House of Representatives ratified the bill on July 24, after it was delayed due to the transition in the lower chamber's leadership. The ratification of the bill was the result of Duterte's direction to the Congress to expedite its passage. A copy of the Bangsamoro Organic Law was released a day following its signing.
