Department of Health has declared an outbreak of leptospirosis in places such as Quezon City, Taguig, Pasig, Parañaque, Navotas, Mandaluyong, and Malabon. Leptospirosis is a disease that is caused by being bitten by infected animals or drinking their urine. There are also cases where leptospirosis enters the body through an open wound from water contaminated by rat urine. The symptoms are usually fever and other symptoms similar to other diseases. There are even times that the infected person shows no symptoms at all.

Leptospirosis is fatal, especially to kids. A grandmother was beside herself with grief when her grandson suddenly died after feeling just a bit feverish. She was not alone in her sorrow since most of her neighbors also suffered the same fate. Overcrowded cities such as Manila are likely to suffer outbreaks since their homes are literally on top of each other. The rat who peed on one’s water supply can also bite the leg of another. This a cause of concern since patients are slowly filling the public hospitals and are probably getting crowded with no space enough to accommodate all of them. These filthy rats are also multiplying and increasing not only in number but in size. I even saw one the size of a kitten!

One should be worried since the weather reports are telling us that there are multiple storms heading to the Philippines, particularly in Luzon. It is expected that there will be flooding and the outbreak in leptospirosis will increase in numbers of victims since the water is from canals inhabited by vermin. How can one protect ones’ family? Experts advised us to always wear rain boots when muddling in the flooded areas. If one was discovered to be walking in flooded areas without protection, they should immediately wash their own feet thoroughly with a germicidal soap. Set rat traps and wash them after catching one since other rats can smell a fellows’ scent and avoid it. The best thing to do is get a vaccine against leptospirosis regularly. When one suspects a family member to be infected, immediately bring to a doctor. Leptospirosis can be fatal, but with the right prevention and treatment, it need not be.
