Flower-in-training: How To Draw Smiles From Others

I love smiles. I love seeing how smiles can transform our faces literally. The pretty becomes beautiful, the old becomes gracefully aged, and the tiresome little poopers become angelic babies. People who love to smile look positively young and healthy, indicating that whatever life has dealt them, they came out victorious.

However, smiles are not easily seen nowadays. People on the streets are usually frowning, though I don’t know if they are really angry or just concentrating. You don’t get it for free, and it is usually faked. My dad labeled it the ‘dog smile’, saying that you’re just showing your teeth. There are even times that when someone smiles by himself, we would assume he got something broken inside his head. Smiles nowadays feels like it’s for sale. We only give it when we need something from the other. Smiles, genuine smiles, is what makes life worth living for. When you see your son smile after a long day at work, when your parent’s smile during graduation, and when your friend tells you ‘Thank you for making me smile’. A friend of mine once said that she felt useless. I was worried that she must be contemplating doing something awful, so I told her she was very useful. When she asked me how? I replied ‘You make me smile’

Flowers might feel that way. Like they are of no use, they couldn’t be eaten or used as medicines. However, can you imagine a world without flowers? No orange, yellow, violet, pink, and all the colors you can see in your garden? No eye-catching bloom to look for when you are bored witless while traveling? I can’t imagine how dreary a flowerless world could be. You are a flower in training, you don’t think you are useful, but your usefulness is in your ability to draw smiles from others. The next time you feel depressed, think of ways to make others smile, that way, you get to smile too.
