How one emotion can destroy you

“It’s all in your head” is what people always say when you tell them you have a problem. Depression is something that no one can physically see, something that creeps on you unexpectedly, and something that is so sudden no one can stop it when it arrives. You were feeling okay the first minute and then plunged into a state so hopeless you do not see the point of your existence the next. The sad thing is, we often dismiss the people who tell us that they need help and someone to talk to. We are so busy right now that we often just take them lightly with a ‘can you tell me later?’ not knowing that later is already too late.

Depression is so devastating that you only realize that enough is enough when he already decided to end his life. I saw a picture of a family who looked so happy and content one would envy them, however, the caption read, ‘Three days before my husband succumbed to depression’. They were so happy. He did not even pause to think of his wife who would be left alone, his children who would become fatherless, and the people who depend on him. Depression can create a tunnel-like vision with the focus of your mistakes, problems, and your own worthlessness.

How can we fight back? First of all, one should become more attentive to the people surrounding him. There are people who used to be cheerful and then become a quiet person all of a sudden. There are also people who quietly sit in the corner and relish their misery by themselves. Stay with them and do not ever let them be alone. Second, contact your other friends so someone can monitor the depressed person at all times. Time is the essence since that person is likely to be suicidal and will give in to the urge when he feels that no one cares. Lastly, tell him he is loved and needed. Depression is something that can only be fought when one truly values the person suffering, so do not ever stop reminding him of his worth. Depression can be banished when one discovers that there is more to life than what he feels right now.
