In our desperation of landing a job abroad quickly, we tend to believe these illegal recruiters became their prey
The Philippines is one of the sources of the world’s workforce; you can see Filipinos in almost every country on this planet working as professionals, technical personnel, office staffs, consultants, domestic workers, and others. Though some were hired directly by their companies, mostly were deployed thru recruitment agencies especially those who were stationed in the Middle East.
Recruitment agencies in the country are being regulated by the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency or POEA. However, there are still unscrupulous individuals who swindle their fellowmen just to take advantage of their need to work abroad. Here are some of the tips from the Philippines Overseas Employment Agency’s website on how to spot an illegal recruiter:
- He/She asks for a placement fee or any fees without issuing an original receipt that bears the name of their agency.
- He/She will promise you with an instant employment and immediate flight abroad.
- He/She requires the applicant for a medical examination or training even if there’s still no positive employer or contract of employment. Medical examinations are only required when you will be processing for your employment visa.
- Instead of transacting in the licensed recruitment agency’s office, he/she goes door to door for recruiting prospected applicants.
- Transacting with their prospected applicant in public places such as restaurants, and malls; and not in the office of a licensed agency.
- No definite information on the details of employment or contract.
- Offering a “direct hiring” in a company instead of following the standard procedures for overseas employment of the POEA.
- They will only process your application as a tourist visa instead of giving you a worker visa.
- They can’t provide an employment contract or show a working visa.
- Identifying themselves as an employee of a licensed recruitment agency but failed to show any proof.
- Claiming to be connected to a travel agency or a training center.
- They don’t provide enough information to their personal identification such as their full names or even their complete address.
In my next article, let’s talk about how to safely secure a job abroad. As a former OFW myself, I can understand why there are still many people who fall in the tricks of these swindlers in spite of all the warnings issued by the authorities against these practices. In our desperation of landing a job abroad quickly, we tend to believe these illegal recruiters became their prey.
