OFWs: The hope of many Filipino families

The world was outraged when a famous Kuwaiti makeup artist complained about the new laws passed which gave OFWs weekly day offs and where allowed to keep their passports with them. She reasoned that such actions are likely to cause her money because her maid can leave at any time. The video she made went viral and her followers in her social media accounts slowly unfollowed her and labeled her ‘pretty outside yet dirty inside’. Until now, people are making her infamous by creating a new hashtag with her name and encouraging others to do so as well.

This kind of perspective reminded us of the grotesque death that an OFW from Kuwait experienced. She worked for a Lebanese couple and was discovered chopped piece by piece inside a refrigerator. After that, Kuwait was declared as a banned place for OFWs. Our beloved president even said that he would sell his soul to the devil just to make the OFWs safe and protected. There are also posts in social media where screenshots showing conversations between Filipinos and people from different nationalities fighting when they dissed Filipinos because of the ‘only clean bathrooms and houses’ in their countries.

These break our hearts. These foreigners, though not all, neglect to remember or even care that these OFWs have families waiting for them at home. How they endured loneliness and unhappiness just so their children can eat, siblings can go to school, and their families to have a greater chance of succeeding in life.  Stories where children of OFWs hate their parents for leaving them, their spouses finding lovers, and families always asking for more and more are everywhere. All for the sake of finding the money they can never earn here in the Philippines.

OFWs are human beings too. They have family and friends who are waiting for them to come home. So please, if you have OFWs with you or have a friend who is one, treat them with respect and care. They have experienced what we can only imagine.
