OVERCOMING CRAB MENTALITY

Crab mentality is one of the oldest widely used terms among Filipinos. This term refers to people who pull other people down, so no one can position himself at the top. This usually happens in nations with limited opportunity and limited avenue to showcase one’s talents. Specifically this happens to a person cannot wait for the perfect time to make things happen.  Moreover, crab mentality is an attitude that clings on the phrase “if I can’t have it, neither can you.”

This concept is taken from the real reactions when you put together several crabs in a bucket. If a crab tries to escape from the bucket of live crabs, other crabs will pull it back down rather than allowing it to get free. The same thing will happen in a community of underprivileged individuals. If someone will attempt to get out of bad life situations, they often find themselves disappointed by friends and family members who keep sucking them back in. For example, a poor family from the province will not allow their children to achieve a higher education than that of their parents fearing that one day they will lord over them.

How can a person overcome crab mentality and wins against it? In a secular work for that matter, there are few ways to do it. First, a person must aim for a promotion. He must never allow himself to be in the current position wherein he has the potential and qualifications to occupy higher position. Second, he must keep himself abreast with the latest requirements and qualifications for the position he is aspiring.  Third, a person must keep to himself only whatever movement he does for the completion of the necessary requirement. Fourth, he must exude excellence to his assigned duties and responsibilities and show his extraordinary skills and talents to his head person. Fifth, he must find some connections. Connecting other people nowadays is advantageous in gaining approval of your application for promotion. Sixth, he must never go down to the level of his colleagues if he knows gossiping, lies and backstabbing are being done to him. Afterall, they are not part of the search committee. Lastly, after subjecting himself from ranking procedures conducted by the committee, he must accept whatever the result will be. If you will be selected, you won the battle as for now. If not, then maybe it is not yet his time. Maybe, it will be tomorrow.
