Should we follow the famous trend of being ‘Young Parents’?

Filipinos are, as we know, family-oriented. We enjoy having our families around us and rejoice when babies are born in the clan. But, there is also a problem with this. More often than not, we often give birth to children we cannot afford. The young people of this generation are giving birth to children when they are still children themselves.  I have seen a lot of my former student’s batch mates become a “batang ama” or young father when they chose to have premarital sex. This is not uncommon. What is peculiar is the mindset that they have. “It’s better to give birth at a young age because you will still be young when your children are teenagers” said one of her classmates. Logical? Maybe. Practical? Absolutely not.

When they engage in unprotected sex with knowledge that their hard work can bear fruit, they are being selfish and irresponsible. Young people, especially high school and college students who have premarital sex when they do not have the means to buy milk and diapers for the baby are so self-absorbed that he or she can’t remember the mother and father who is working for them to finish their studies. Instead of being a help in the family, they become a burden when they stop going to school during pregnancy and just ask for money when they babies has needs. Parents of these young “parents” become harried when they are already stressed out with family problems and then the baby comes around and add to problems too when they should be a ‘blessing’.

What is the solution for this? We obviously cannot stop each and every young people from engaging in this act. The only solution I can give is to tell this unemployed young people to think of their poor, hardworking parents before they DO it or ask themselves if they can afford the babies’ needs with money from their own pocket. If they still cannot, then avoid having unprotected sex. The world already has a lot of problems without you adding more to it.
