Maslow's hierarchy of needs says that the love and belongingness stage includes friendship. Friends are truly one of the essentials of life; a person may have one or plenty of friends. Like any other needs, having friends also comes with pros and cons. What are the pros? If you have a friend, you will eventually have a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen to your exciting, happy and even miserable stories and experiences. Your friend could also be a family for you who will give you support and provide your needs and wants, may it be money, food, experiences, or criticism. You've got a one-call away person when you have a friend.
Inasmuch as having the advantages, having friends is also disadvantageous at times. Given the fact that you are always with them, you will also have the tendency to be very dependent on them to the point that you cannot make a decision on your own. There are friends - very minimal- that could be a bad influence. Finally, along with sarcasm, everyone is aware that when someone has friends already, initiating a new close interpersonal relationship with new people could be hard.
It is not just about choosing who you want, choosing your buds should be a wise decision. Make sure they are of good influence. Your actions and decisions will show what kind of friends you have in your circle. Aside from your family, they are your influencers, supporters and they are sincerely ready to listen to you. If your relationship with them is healthy and you don’t have to compromise your individuality, then you could say that you have the right ones. Thus, these are the people called friends, the ones who bring out the best in you.
