The Traditional Courtship

In this new generation where it is not usually heard of, to be serenaded secretly by a man is what every girl would romanticize about. In the past, there existed an old Filipino courtship custom called “harana” that usually happened during the night. The singing is usually accompanied by an acoustic guitar either played by the suitor or one of his friends. Luckily, in the old days, this sweet show of affection was part of courtship among Filipinos.

This kind of courtship was done in order to win the heart of the woman they admire the most through the gift of song. This was a way of the suitor to show his beloved what he truly felt for her. Back then, the usual song was “O, ilaw” which compared the woman to a star in the night. Sound cheesy right?  Even until today, the song is still heard of in the Filipino community.

In today’s modern world, this custom is not practiced as much before. Since the world is so fast and modernized, there are many ways to do a certain courtship. It can now be through phone calls and internet. Although the “harana” courtship is not done in the traditional way anymore, it doesn’t mean that the depth of the Filipinos love has changed over the years.
