The Philippine archipelago has a diverse culture and history with its own style of self-defense system known as Arnis/Kali. There are so many styles and types of Arnis/Kali techniques around the world today, which have survived and created all through the diverse areas, families and instructors who have protected what is sometimes referred to as a "perfect" martial art system.
Arnis/Kali was initially created by the local people of different islands utilizing impact and bladed weapons like rattan, kamagong, kampilan, sundang, pinuti, panabas, and other common farming tools which can be used for battle and self-defense.
When Ferdinand Magellan's arrived in Mactan island on 1521, he was met by Raja Lapu-lapu with his villages and fighters and defeated him with the native’s simple indigenous weapons against their sophisticated armaments. The Spanish conquerors returned to the Philippines in the 1570's with their more advanced weapons and cannons which made it hard for the natives to defend themselves against their enemy. Since then, the practice of any self-defense system including Arnis/Kali was outlawed, but the natives were so clever and continued to practice their martial arts through dances and other performances which would delight their visitors, thinking that they were doing some ritual dances to their deities. In this way, their techniques and art were honed and was passed down to their children.
The martial arts were called Arnis or Kali, which most of the times were so confusing. However, they can be used interchangeably because the martial art was called with many different names depending on the region where the system came from and the family who developed it. The arts have different techniques, but all of them use almost the same type of weapons including rattan stick, dagger, and swords.
Although some Arnis/Kali masters had developed a modern type of the art, you can still find some Spanish influence on their technique names. It is evident that Arnis/Kali had spread throughout the world and is very effective for self-defense and even law enforcement especially for the special forces because it deals not only with weapons but also hand to hand combat, that’s why it sometimes referred to as “perfect” martial art system.
