One of the wonderful things with technology is that there’s always something you can do. But for children who spend too much time interacting with smartphones, it has been an alarming issue. Between the ages of 0-2 years old, an infants brain triple in size. Thus, a parents attention, touch, and voice can help build pathways in their brain that aid them in learning how to interact emotionally with others. Smartphones affect children's attention and self-esteem. It becomes their first addiction.
If a child gets too much addicted to a smartphone, they will throw a fit if you take away what they are obsessed with. Giving your child smartphone or tablet to satisfy them when they are having a tantrum isn't a great idea, either. I personally saw some parents who allow their children to use it to calm and distract them. It is estimated that 60% of parents do not supervise the amount of time their children use gadgets. The smartphone is so harmful to a child’s ability to learn, and it has become a distraction. These smartphones also may replace outdoor activities important for their gross motor skills. A child that is addicted to smartphone become stationary which limits their physical activities.
I encourage all parents to engage directly with their children instead of depending on educational applications. Distracted parental attention harm children’s social and emotional development. Kids thrive when they receive consistent, dependable, focused, and loving attention. Enjoy that brief moment you have to help your child grow into the adult you hope they will become. They don’t need smartphones, your presence is what matters the most.
