The Many Faces of Social Media Truth be told: Almost all, professionals or students, rich or poor, and even young and old, has a social media account. Today’s generation is revolving around social media. Everyone feels the need to be electronically connected so as not to get left behind with the “current trends”. However, if we come to think thoroughly of it, is social media worthy of our time to be spent with? To be fair, social media offers a lot of benefits: It can connect people around the world, making it a source of information of the current news and happenings on every side of the globe as well as a good platform for business opportunities. But the matter now is that people tend to become parasites to these media. Sharing everything from their day to day activities, outfit of the day, pictures of them at a fancy coffee shops, a snap of all the food they were about to eat, and endless, endless selfies. That makes us think that these people are sharing unsolicited information making others feel envious of whatever other people have. Aside from that, a lot of false information are being created through social media because of its easy access, and some, without even confirming facts, share those to their accounts making people believe on those lies. It is said that technology eases the life of everyone. However, seeing what is happening to the world due to social media alone, do you think it’s worth it? It connects people who are far away from you but detaches you from those who are near you. It shows us what is happening on the other side of the world but confuses us on what is real because of so many stories. It makes one share all their fancy experiences but make others envy. It makes one react on some issues but craves the approval of many to feed one’s ego. It saves you time from checking on things but eats up all your time by endless scrolling. It makes you famous through likes but earn bashers as well in which their hate will pierce you every night. Yes. Those are the many faces of social media and so much more. It is up to you if you still think your time is worthy to be spent with it.

‘John Lloyd Cruz is dead’ whispered one of my friends during one of our meetings. This was a new I was baffled to hear and soon after the room was filled with buzzing. “How did he die?” ‘Cardiac Arrest’ ‘No. It was a driving accident’ ‘Wrong. He was stabbed by Ellen Adarna’. Everyone was confused. Was he truly dead? How did he really die? Our hearts were saddened for the passing of such a great actor.
Except, he didn’t have a cardiac arrest, driving accident, or was stabbed to death by Ellen. It was all fake news! We had a hearty laugh when it was announced to be fake but, the significance of its impact stayed with me. How can such heartbreaking news spread and go viral with the cause of death different every time it was talked about? John Lloyd must have been shocked to hear that he died. It’s funny until the news is different in that it can cause someone’s reputation to blow into pieces. It’s not funny if you are actually sharing a post that would hurt someone when it is all untrue.
What do you have to do when this kind of news reaches your ears? What you have to do is validate the news by searching Google and other search engines. Fake news are often quickly controlled and corrected by the person involved or by his manager so you can see posts that rebuff or confirm the given news. You should also check the sites that are giving this news. Are they reliable? Or are they just trying to make their page famous? Have the wisdom to discern the trustworthiness of the sites that give breaking news.  If you have done this and still are not sure of the validity of the news, then don’t post just yet. Posting in your social media accounts when you are unsure of the news could ruin your reputation and make you an unreliable person who just passes the information without clear proof.
