The more children you have, the greater your wealth will be. How true?

‘You need to find work as soon as you graduate so you can take care of us when we grow old’. This is what Filipino parents often tell their children who are graduating or in their fourth year in college. I do not think this is wrong. But, I have to be honest and say this puts a pressure that is not usually meant to be there. Parents should not see their children as their guarantee for a future filled with luxury but they should invest in their retirement themselves.

Your children are not truly obliged to care for you neither should you imply that you want to be cared for financially since you ‘paid’ for their education and everything. It gives the assumption that if they were not born, you would have been financially okay and that would hurt them. It is the parents’ obligation to supply for their children needs in any way they can and yet, there is still that kind of mindset that parents would live off their children after they find jobs.

This is so common in the Philippines that wherever you look, extended families are found to be literally living ‘bursting to the seams’ in one house. I am not criticizing but I believe that planning for your retirement is the best option to avoid financial strains that would lead to relationship strains to you and to your children. It’s not too late. You can start looking for ways to ensure a comfortable retirement.
