We are vulnerable to virtual attacks. Our information was exposed to the public. Would you be able to retrieve a highly sensitive information?
There are many issues we're facing today when it comes to using social media. The problem goes to the baby boomers. They are the people born from the 1970's who had no idea how the social media platform works.
Our job today is to teach an older friend or our parents to carefully read any guidelines from anything online. What information is often asked?
How can we protect our loved ones from any of these dilemmas?
- Name, Age and Location. There is what we call the geo-targeting. We are always the target. Our location and our behavior online. We are the basis of product creation. Consider Facebook has over three billion users and one in ten people was a victim of human trafficking. Another one in ten people is a victim of identity theft, murder, and defamation.
- Make your profile private, where personal information is stored.
- Be cautious in a public wifi when making an online purchase. Credit card information is susceptible to hackers. If there is an option for cash on delivery, use it. It's safer than receiving a package with a bar of detergent soap in a box of 12,000 pesos mobile phone.
- Always use a safe browsing platform in Incognito. Google is the most used and doesn't forget to have an antimalware software, a virus scanner. Most website use robots to crawl into your system, to gather information.
- Always clear the history on your browser and clear cache. The cause of slow wifi is stored data and cookies.
In 2004 when I created my first email account. None of these warnings occurred to me. Nobody was there to inform. I just had a swift decision of having an email address. As I was so excited, I chatted to a few spammers which whom I called friends at that time. They used to be harmless and good looking. My innocent self gladly gives my information in return of a package that was not real. They will give you a tracking number to make sure your gift was on the way.
After a certain time, they will inform you that the package that was held in customs and you need to send money to claim it.
That my friends are real spam, don't be victimize of these people especially in the virtual world. We only have to get a dress with more information before the surge into a new world that is risky for you and be teachable.
