During my teens and early twenties, I spent far too much worrying about what everyone else think of me and the way I looked. I used make-up as a way to cover up the real problem of my face. It got worse when social media took over. I saw hundreds of images of other women who look better than me - who are prettier and lovelier. I became even paranoid about how I look like.
Make-up has become something I can’t live without since I was having problems with self-esteem if I am without make-up. However, I was the more having problems with myself while I wear it. It took a while for me to realize that make-up did not make me confident. It did not correct what was wrong. It actually reveal the real score that I was not really confident in who I was. I thought I had to be someone else and that is something make-up could not fix.
My husband tells me regularly that I am more beautiful without make-up. He loves and sees me in all my glory without it. From then on, I learned to appreciate the beauty God blessed me with. I’m more than my looks. Yes, accepting it wasn’t easy to learn. I thought if I look a certain way, it would open doors or get me where I wanted to go. Ironically, the opposite happened. When I put all my value on my looks, my insecurities was evident to everyone. I learned to focus less on the façade and more on what is inside of me. I will never let make-up consume the real beauty in me.
