We love our gadgets. I don’t exactly know when, but gadgets somehow dominate our lives. We use our gadgets for socializing, use apps when we order online, and play games on our phones and laptops. You can literally find everything in your phone. I recently downloaded a game and I find it so enjoyable I didn’t notice that I played for three hours straight! I can only scratch my head, wondering how time passed so quickly.
Gadgets are great when it is used properly and with moderation, but when one becomes addicted to it, that is the time it becomes an abomination. Not just the gadgets alone, but the apps that one can install or the sites one can visit. This is one of the reasons why children should never be given tablets or phones that can connect to the internet until they reach a certain age. Innocent minds can slowly be corrupted if guardians do not supervise, which is probably the case especially when they are too busy to do it all the time. I have read several stories about porn addiction which just started with stumbling in these malicious sites. I even see reports about rapists who have these blank look in their eyes, making you wonder if they actually understood the situation they are in. A cousin of mine is addicted to video games and his mom would complain to us how she had to repeat her commands with him. He would get angry if he is disturbed when playing and wore the famous ‘blank’ look after his gaming sessions. His mom would ask him to do some chores later and he would forget it in a few minutes.
How can we filter the bad from the good? First of all, guardians should refrain from giving gadgets when the child is still under thirteen. If one needs the distraction and the easiest would be making him watch videos, make sure that the phone is locked and he can’t go to the other apps. Another solution would be arranging the time for when he can play or use gadgets. Give him at least an hour a day to play after finishing his home works so that it can serve as a motivation and not a distraction. Addiction to games and malicious sites only starts with just one click, so be careful in how you let your child or young sibling use your gadgets.
